We, your shareholders, demand:
This morning I was reading an article in the Chicago Tribune that said three major energy producers (Valero Energy, Tesoro, and Occidental Petroleum) are getting grief from organizers within their shareholders. The shareholder groups, while representing very small segments of the total, are organized and taking the company management to task for spending large sums of cash in political advertising to oppose California’s Proposition 23, which will require cutting industrial and vehicle emissions. I’ll leave it to others to decide if that’s a good idea or not. My thought for this discussion is about more useful discussions that shareholders could have with company management.

Engineering and IT Insight: Schedules for engineers
A missing or unrealistic schedule is a bad habit common to unsuccessful projects. Lack of experience in the project space can lead to ballpark estimates and schedule slippage. Zeno’s Project Paradox is that no matter how hard you work on a late project, it is never more than 90% complete. Ask any project manager of a late project, and they always say the project is 90% complete, even if they have spent 200% of the budget and are months, sometimes years late.
Reporting from Emerson Global Users Exchange
Watch for Control Engineering video reporting from San Antonio as we travel to this major process industry event.
Cyber Crooks Have Edge
Less than 6 percent of respondents were “highly confident” that private enterprises have sufficient controls in place to minimize the occurrence of cyber crime. Almost 40 percent of respondents are “not confident” in controls implemented by private enterprises. Results from a cyber crime prevention webcast done by Deloitte showed an even split among respondents regarding whether or not their organization was likely to experience an electronic security breach in the next 12 months. Of those polled, 41.7 percent believed it was “likely” or “extremely likely” that an electronic security breach would occur in this time frame, while 38.4 percent felt it was “unlikely” or “extremely unlikely.” “Cyber crime is far more common and creates a larger threat than respondents may recognize,” said John Kula, director in the forensic & dispute services practice of Deloitte Financial Advisory Services.

Domestic oil sources drying up?
An interesting article recently made the point that crude oil production from Alaskan fields is declining, and the big pipeline that brings product south is reaching the point where it is turning into a maintenance problem. Long story short, these days the pipeline is delivering less oil, which increases problems with corrosion and damage from the environment. You can walk faster than the flow velocity. The fields in Alaska that have been the biggest producers are declining and there isn’t much enthusiasm for expanding drilling, especially offshore.

Deal breaker: Credit crunch smashes i2-JDA merger
It appears that the global credit crunch has killed JDA Software ’s plan to acquire supply chain management software specialist i2 Technologies . In announcing the proposed $346 million acquisition in August, CEOs of both companies said the deal would create one of the world’s strongest best-of-breed supply chain software suppliers. In early November, however, JDA asked to negotiate a lower price, stating that because of the recent financial crisis, “available credit terms would result in unacceptable risks and costs to the combined company.” That didn’t fly with i2 management, which argued that the deal was not tied to JDA’s ability to obtain favorable financing. If JDA didn’t agree to the original terms, i2 management said it would exercise its right to terminate the deal and collect a $20 million termination fee. On December 4, i2 announced its intent to terminate the deal and said it expected JDA to pay the $20 million within three business days. While it seems clear this deal is dead, the question now becomes: what does i2 do next? This former industry heavyweight has struggled to stay afloat since the dot-com crash. Most of the companies it competed with in the supply chain management space have either been acquired by other companies or decided to operate as smaller niche players focusing on solving specific supply chain problems. In a statement announcing the end of the agreement with JDA, Jackson L.

Demand planning: New SAS forecasting tool can aid S&OP
SAS , long recognized as a leading supplier of technology for analyzing business processes, has introduced a new solution that supports the execution of demand forecasting. The new solution—called SAS Demand-Driven Forecasting—not only allows for predicting what products customers will want to buy over a given time frame, but also offers capabilities for shaping those demand patterns, according to SAS officials.“It allows for being proactive rather than reactive [in demand planning] by determining things like which product mix makes sense,” says Ritu Jain, SAS product marketing manager for manufacturing and supply chain solutions. The criteria for judging what makes sense can include the manufacturer’s profit margins, Jain adds.Charlie Chase, a SAS business enablement manager, says this demand-shaping capability is just one of many features“We introduced SAS Forecast Server [in 2005] as a front-end to other demand planning solutions,” Chase says. “It focused on analyzing data to create sales forecasts.”The chief selling point for SAS Forecast Server was its ability to crunch numbers faster—and SAS claims more accurately—than most other forecast engines, which gave users the capability to include many more products“They wanted an integrated solution that would also help them sense and shape demand,” he says.

Product: Multiple detector array analyzes polymers, proteins
Using Viscotek's Tetra Detector Array, you can obtain absolute molecular weight, molecular size (to less than 1 nm), and intrinsic viscosity, as well as information on branching, conformation, aggregation and copolymer composition, all in a single GPC/SEC experiment. If you manufacture natural or synthetic polymers, biopolymers, or proteins, the Tetra Detector Array from Viscotek offers sophisticated GPC/SEC multiple detection technology for product characterization. The instrumentation array includes a low-angle light-scattering (LALS) detector, four capillary viscometer detectors, refractometer, and selectable wavelength UV/VIS. With this combination of sensors, it can reportedly characterize: Absolute molecular weight; Molecular size; Intrinsic viscosity; Branching; Conformation; and, Copolymer composition. All the detectors, as well as the GPC columns, are contained within a heated oven compartment with temperature control to 80 °C (175 °F), which means your sample never sees a temperature variation/ The integration and unique, proprietary arrangement of detectors (UV-LS-RI-VISC) ensures minimal inter-detector volumes and reduced band-broadening, and eliminates the dilution effect and viscometer breakthrough experienced when the RI is placed last in the series. Overcoming the deadtime dilemma
Arguably the trickiest problem to overcome with a feedback controller is process deadtime--the delay between the application of a control effort and its first effect on the process variable. During that interval, the process does not respond to the controller's activity at all, and any attempt to manipulate the process variable before the deadtime has elapsed inevitably fails. Deadtime occurs in many different control applications, generally as a result of material being transported from the site of the actuator to another location where the sensor measures the process variable. Not until the material has reached the sensor can any changes caused by the actuator be detected.
