Boone, NC —HSF Series and SMC Series cylindrical surface mount resistors from TT electronics IRC Wire and Film Technologies Div. are intended for surge/pulse applications and circuits subject to extreme thermal cycling. Both use IRC’s MetalGlaze thick film resistive elements on cylindrical ceramic substrates, said to provide improved heat dissipation, solderability, and surge/pulse capabilities. The two series are optimized for different applications.
HSF Series features an unspiralled thick-film element that offers three times the surge rating of IRC’s standard CHP Series or as much as 10 times the rating of a conventional flat chip 2512 component. This Series fits within the footprint of a standard 2512 chip to save board space compared to a similar wirewound device. They offer a power rating of 1W at 70 °C and a working voltage of 350 V. Maximum operating temperature is 150 °C.
SMC Series reportedly provides maximum thermal compliance for use in applications subject to extreme temperature cycling. Designed to fit within industry standard 2512 and 3610 footprints, the devices are said to be suited for automotive, power supply, and industrial applications that require a surface mount resistor with superior surge and thermal characteristics. This Series has a maximum power rating of 1W at 70 °C for the 2512 package and 2W at 70 °C for the 3610-size package. Maximum operating temperature also is 150 °C.
