Improved: Online calculator for UL508A SCCR

Online software helps speed UL-required calculations for short-circuit current rating of panels, says Cooper Bussmann..

The previously introduced, industry first online short-circuit current rating (SCCR) software (OSCAR) has been upgraded with initial user input, according to Cooper Bussmann . The compliance software helps eliminate guesswork commonly associated with calculating the total SCCR of all individual components in a panel, and reduces non-compliance issues that can result in costly shutdowns and delays.

Electrical industry standards (Underwriter’s Laboratories’ UL508A and the 2005 National Electrical Code article 409) require all electrical panels and assemblies to prominently display nameplates with SCCR totals. With a one-year subscription, users can access OSCAR compliance software online as often as needed. By entering a component part number, OSCAR taps into its database of more than 50,000 online item part numbers and accurately determines the assembly SCCR to help ensure safety.

“Safety and protection are important measures in the development of Cooper Bussmann products, and we continuously work to enhance products and services to help our customers meet these stringent requirements,” said Bob Bender, Cooper Bussmann vice president of marketing. “The UL508A standard not only helps determine and label the short-circuit current rating of panels, it also safeguards construction and proper identification of short-circuit current ratings so users can optimize productivity and protect equipment.”

Updates include new part numbers, component SCCRs, and, as needed, any changes that may occur to code requirements and agency standards. A custom device option allows users to enter specialized component rating information for devices not found in the OSCAR database.
