Dear Control Engineering: I was watching one of the videos from Emerson Global Users Exchange, an interview with Scott Saunders from MooreHawke. We’ve been looking at installing some Foundation fieldbus segments, and I was interested in his comments about redundant and fault tolerant segments. What is the difference between those two approaches? One of the things that users find scary about fieldbus architecture in general is that all the devices on a segment send their data over one cable, and if anything happens to that cable or supporting components, communication is lost to that whole group of devices.
It is important to fit the upcoming project into the right legal category. In automation terms, think of the project delivery method as the operating system, with the contracts or purchase orders being executable software. The Rabigh Integrated Refining and Petrochemical Complex on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia is an enormous upgrade and construction project, slated for completion in the second half of 2008. A joint venture of Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical, the project will enhance an existing oil refinery and add a new petrochemical complex that will annually produce 1.3 million tons of ethylene and 2.4 million tons of petrochemical derivatives such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Occasionally whitepapers and articles cross our desks that might be a little too proprietary for regular editorial use, but they still have some particular interest beyond a specific product or manufacturer. A recent paper written for the Profibus International User Conference by James Powell, an engineer for Siemens Milltronics division, brings up some interesting points about one of the lesser known capabilities of a process fieldbus. Powell has found that acyclic data capabilities of Profibus (and potentially other similar architectures) when combined with the right type of control equipment, can look deep into a piece of process instrumentation and find what is going on in the most detailed levels. This method avoids all tendencies for the network and controller to smooth over microscopic but violent changes in the data that go on between checkpoints. As Powell puts it, “Being able to look at your instruments through this 'microscope' has its advantages and its challenges.

The organization also discussed release of its Device Description Integrated Development Environment (DD-IDE), unveil its new Website, and introduce new personnel. Speaking to a sizeable turnout of media representatives, Rich Timoney, Fieldbus Foundation president and CEO, described the recent developments, noting that the provider program provides a strong incentive for automation developers to become involved with Foundation technology and that the training program will establish uniform standards for the fieldbus training curriculum. FOUNDATION Certified Solution Provider Program (FCSP) is intended to encourage greater support for fieldbus device development in the automation industry and define an acceptable level of expertise for FOUNDATION-certified solution providers. Moore Industries-International, Inc. reports a new, intrinsically safe (IS) split-architecture system that supports up to 350mA per segment for hazardous locations. Initially, fieldbus implementations used a conventional IS interface, applying the industry-standard Entity Concept, and the loop (now a segment) would be safe. The problem was conventional IS interfaces under the Entity Concept allowed only 80mA or so, barely enough to drive four devices at an average draw of 20mA per device.
