Last month’s article on temperature sensors was a record breaker for downloads. One part that deserves more discussion is the topic of signal conditioning and how using a transmitter at the sensor can solve problems encountered with weak voltage or resistance signals from temperature sensors and other types of unamplified sensors. If you’ve worked with thermocouples, you know that they require specialized cables to match the specific thermocouple type, and specialized I/O cards at your PLC. September 21 Implementation Chronicles Update
The much-delayed HMI hardware finally arrived for the biopharmaceutical filtration automation project, but development of HMI applications still await the arrival of the project’s main server. In the meantime, blogger John Sever and his system integrator associates forged ahead on the project by spending time correcting inconsistencies between the I/O list from the skid vendor and the P&IDs. Meanwhile, down in Louisiana, blogger Stan Prutz reports that things are starting to get back to normal following Hurricane Katrina and that their focus is again shifting back to the project at hand in Baton Rouge. Wastewater SCADA project: While awaiting maintenance personnel to return to their jobs from scheduled vacations, Prutz and the other integrators at QDS are looking at retaining 13 of the facility’s existing RTUs, requiring firmware upgrades to support the Modbus protocol.
Consortium approves EBX specification revisions

Germantown, Wis. —786 series pluggable transducers convert 0-10 V or 4-20 mA signals into an isolated 0-10 V, 0-20 mA, or 4-20 mA signal with an isolation rating of 4 kV. The transducers are plugged directly onto a terminal block assembly. Modules are protected against mismating and can be replaced in a single operation without affecting wiring.
Simplified interconnect system
Santa Ana, Calif.— MPIS, Multi-Port Interconnect System, is a bus system intended for applications including control systems for production equipment, automated assembly, and conveyor sensors. MPIS has a simplified wiring system that eliminates wiring errors and long cable runs to input and output devices.
