Video listen in: Making Coriolis two-wire demands small sacrifices

Giving up a larger cable to Coriolis sensors wasn’t easy and required some very clever engineering. Coriolis flowmeter sensors require more power than many other technologies, which is why they have traditionally required four-wire cables and external power. This has effectively precluded using them in situations where only two-wire loop power is installed. That is until now. Link to video.

Last month’s article on temperature sensors was a record breaker for downloads. One part that deserves more discussion is the topic of signal conditioning and how using a transmitter at the sensor can solve problems encountered with weak voltage or resistance signals from temperature sensors and other types of unamplified sensors. If you’ve worked with thermocouples, you know that they require specialized cables to match the specific thermocouple type, and specialized I/O cards at your PLC. You also know that the signal voltages put out are only a few milliVolts, so it doesn’t take much RFI, EMI, or other disturbance to corrupt the signal and throw off your reading if it has to be sent over any kind of distance.

New I/O system: Safety, higher density, ATEX-compliant

New high-density modules, enhanced diagnostics, and ATEX compliance help increase performance and reduce installed costs for Invensys' flagship safety instrumented systems (SIS), the company says. The Triconex unit of Invensys Process Systems says its new generation of I/O subsystems for Tricon triple-modular-redundant (TMR) safety and critical process control systems also has higher resolution, faster scan rates, an innovative approach for per-point supervision, and user-configurable nominal load limits in digital output modules. The new I/O features provide increased speed and better accuracy for high-speed critical control applications, improving operations of connected control components, while decreasing the cost per I/O point and cost of ownership, says Triconex. Related announcements from the company include: Release of Version 10.2.1 of the Tricon safety instrumented system platform. This provides Tricon users with increased levels of flexibility when configuring safe and reliable critical control systems. Release of TriStation 1131 version 4.1.437 developer's workbench within Tricon v10.2.1, to support I/O module configuration. Signal isolation: clean up analog I/O problems

Have you ever had these problems with your analog I/O signals: Signal crosstalk; Common-mode voltages; DC common-mode rejection; AC common-mode rejection; or, Over-range and input protection issues. If you answer 'yes,' to any of these, request a copy of Dataforth 's new five-page application note, 'Why Use Isolated Signal Conditioners.' It is available for free download from their Website and explains how analog signals can be degraded by ground loop currents and induced electrical noise. The text discusses all five of these problems, including real-life examples, with explanations of how measurement inputs become corrupted in the process. Dataforth signal conditioning modules (SCMs) are said to eliminate these problems and can be used on all analog signal lines. Isolated signal conditioning products reportedly protect and preserve valuable measurement and control signals and equipment from dangerous and degrading effects of noise, transient power surges, internal ground loops, and other industrial hazards. --Control Engineering Daily News Desk Peter Welander , process industries editor.

Preparation Pays Off

Anyone who has painted a room or a house, hung wallpaper or tile, or planted flowers or a vegetable garden understands the importance of preparation. Unless the surface or soil is properly prepared, the most expensive paint, wallpaper, or plants won't yield the desired results. The same is true with control and automation systems.

Object-Oriented Programming: A Primer

The seeds of object-oriented programming might be traced back to the concept of the API (application programming interface). An API is basically a piece of paper that defines a set of subroutines and the behavior an application can expect to get when calling them. For example, a graphics API might include functions such as DrawLine(a,b) and DrawCircle(x,y,radius).

Insulation displacement yields cost benefits

I nsulation Displacement Connection (IDC) is a highly reliable connection technology. It has been used for many years in the telecommunications/electronics industry and has been making its way into industrial control and automation applications. Passing stringent testing required of existing screw and spring technology terminal blocks, IDC has proven itself as a viable termination solution. IMAGE https://www.controleng.com/archives/2002/ctl0202.01/images/ctl0202bba1.jpg Making an insulation displacement connection entails forcing a conductor through a space between two terminating blades making contact with metal. IDC technology allows end-users to terminate wires without stripping or ferruling, thereby saving an average of 60% on installed costs while maintaining (or increasing) reliability and functionality. Cost reductions are a continuous need in today's automation and control industry. In an effort to support requirements to reduce costs, suppliers must either reduce component costs (hard costs) or help reduce installation costs (soft costs).
