New enclosures introduced; reader input requested

Bud Industries heavy-duty die cast aluminum NEMA 4X boxes have a hinged cover for easy access without risk of cover damage.

Below are three enclosures for industrial use, but before (or after) you read those, I’d like to hear your views. Have you ever felt you didn’t need to enclose automation for a particular application, but did anyway, only because that’s the way it’s always been done? Or did you choose not to enclose, and the equipment didn’t last as long as you thought it should? I’m doing an article for March 2006 on enclosures. Email these or other enclosure perspectives you are authorized to share with subscribers to [email protected] by Jan. 12, 2006. Thanks. Here are some enclosures from Adalet, Bud Industries Inc., and ITS Enclosures.

Adalet offers line of CENELEC/ATEX certified enclosures for hazardous locations: ATEX-certified flameproof products are currently designed to CENELEC EN50014 and EN50018 standards and require ATEX inspection to verify conformity. (European Union’s ATEX Directive 94/9/EC went into effect on a voluntary basis on March 1, 1996, and became mandatory July 1, 2003; all products sold or placed into service in any EU member-state must be ATEX-certified at that time, Adalet explained; inspection records must be maintained indefinitely.) Adalet’s XCEX series enclosures, XIH/XDH instrument housings, XHPB pushbuttons, XHSS selector switches, and XJ-series screw-cover enclosures are used in installation of electrical/electronic components for control, measurement, or monitoring applications in hazardous environments. XCEX control enclosures can be modified for installation of a variety of explosion-proof operator devices, viewing windows, and accessories, permitting development of custom enclosures. Certifications include UL Standard 1203; CSA Standard C22.2 No. 30; Class I, Groups C, D; Class II, Groups E, F, G; Class III; CENELEC: EEx d IIB; ATEX: 0539 II 2GD; NEMA 4, NEMA 4X (stainless steel bolts required), 7CD, 9EFG; and IEC 60529: IP40 without O-ring; IP66 with O-ring (required for “D” rating).

Bud Industries Inc . offers a diecast aluminum NEMA 4X box with hinged cover , easing access to internal components. Easy-to-assemble external mounting brackets allow mounting on a wall or other flat surfaces. It has NEMA 4X and IP65 ratings, is available in black powder-coat finish, has gasketed covers that attach with M4 stainless-steel screws, and is easily machined and modified to fit particular requirements. Sizes vary; specification file is offered online.

Think big. ITS Enclosures ‘ viewstation VSC-42 encloses and protects standard-size, large-format plasma or LCD displays—40-in. or larger, with NEMA 4/12 protection. Designed for indoor and outdoor applications, viewstation will protect the display from theft, vandalism, the elements, and damage, extending its useful life. It is fully sealed, key locked, has integrated air movement and split-panel cable ingress/egress, and offers ceiling, wall, pole, and custom-mounting options. Smaller-screen designs also are available.
