The Open DeviceNet Vendors Association (ODVA) recently unveiled EtherNet/IP, an application to extend control and information messaging over Ethernet TCP/IP with seamless interconnection to DeviceNet and ControlNet.

In addition to holding a series of technical seminars, ODVA and ControlNet Inter national will make the technology free and downloadable from multiple web sites. Specifications include CIP protocol, an object library, and TCP/IP encapsulation.

The “IP” in the new application’s name stands for “Industrial Protocol,” not to be confused with “Internet Protocol” the IP in TCP/IP. This refers to Control and Information Protocol (CIP) introduced in 1998 to put ControlNet over Ethernet.
