Networked servo drive products from Ormec have recently been expanded and enhanced with the addition of IEEE 1394b technology for the company’s new ServoWire SD Drive family. With 1394b networking, SD Drives gain a more robust, efficient, and faster network than previously available with 1394a, says Ormec. Expanding on the “a” standard, IEEE 1394b defines a roadmap to 3.2-Gbit signaling plus more communications media, such as fiber optic. This network reportedly offers high bandwidth and ease of use via cost-effective, industry-standard cabling.Digital ServoWire SD Drives include analog input/output (I/O) for added capability. An analog input, usable within the drive (or by the host controller), permits high-performance tension control, for example. Analog output is useful for commanding a remote device or as a monitoring signal. SD drive offers eight digital I/O points and two high-speed sensor inputs connected via pluggable terminal blocks with LED indicators to aid in system start up and troubleshooting.
The drive family consists of 14 models, in two series, ranging in size from 3 to 60 A. The 230 Series accepts 115 or 230 V ac inputs, offering 0.6-15 kW output power, while 460 Series accepts inputs of 230 or 460 V ac, providing 2.4-24 kW output power. SD Drives work with various high-performance servo motors-having quadrature and serial encoder or resolver-based feedback devices. These drives also can be used in OEM applications with user-supplied brushless rotary or linear motors-as well as with brush dc and voice-coil motors from various manufacturers. However, consult Ormec for applying the latter motor types.
