EC: Thin Cell iMOD Ultracapacitor Modules

Power - Energy, power protection: Ioxus' thin cell iMOD ultracapacitor modules consist of ultra-high power, pouch cell ultracapacitors, instead of cylindrical cells, for power conditioning and automated guided vehicle applications. This is a Control Engineering 2013 Engineers' Choice finalist.

Thin cell iMOD ultracapacitor modules save space and weight with ultra-thin coated electrodes packaged in ultra-thin pouch cells, which makes them 17% more efficient at a cell level than cylindrical cells. Users benefit with a reduced total cost of ownership as compared to batteries with longer life, higher cycle count, wider operational temperature range and reduced maintenance requirements.

The pouch cells that make up the thin cell iMOD modules typically offer two to three times more power in energy than cylindrical cells. As opposed to batteries, ultracapacitors have a high cycle life and can tolerate a wide temperature range, so they do not need to be frequently replaced. These modules provide a more efficient power source, discharge faster than batteries and supply momentary power quickly.

Thin cell iMOD modules have field-proven reliability and customers include Toshiba Mitsubishi Electric Industrial System Corporation (TMEIC), RICOH, Sanyo Denki and General Electric. They are an optimal solution for power conditioning and voltage sag compensation in short-term uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to protect against voltage disruptions and ensure a smooth power supply to factory equipment and mission-critical applications. They provide up to 101% more energy than competing technologies with the highest possible energy content per shelf for a capacitor-based system with up to 40 kw (10 s) per 4U rack slot. The modules offer size compatibility for all common server rack enclosures, and front terminal products allow for easy replacement or enhancement of common rack mount battery systems.

Thin cell iMOD modules reduce the total cost of ownership of AGVs and robotics applications, as charge times are cut in half and productivity and operating times are increased without the need for battery replacement or charging. A complete system is available for AGV applications, including dc-dc, allowing the modules to fit a range of applications.
