High-performance PLC cost-effective with 32-bit DSP-based controllers

Adaptive Networks has announced development of a new PLC family employing Texas Instruments ’ TMS320F28x digital-signal-controllers. Unlike conventional, wired data networks using dedicated transmission lines, the F28x-enabled PowerConnect series of PLC solutions provides network communications through existing low-, medium-, and high-voltage power-lines over distances up to 50 km, eliminating the need to deploy additional wiring for control and monitoring. Single-chip PLC technology is claimed to offer reliable throughput to full-scale networks. Its coverage of a wide area, in harsh environments, reportedly facilitates monitoring and controlling all nodes within a network for a variety of applications in industrial and other rugged environments, such as factories, utility distribution systems, mines, and underwater cabling.

The 19.2-kbps throughput AN192DPL is available from Adaptive Networks, as a ROM-coded chip, module, and as licensable software for high-volume production. The company indicated that, in quantities over 100K units, cost was under $10/unit.
