New technology improves barcode reader performance

Improved processing algorithm helps extend range of 1D and 2D code reading accuracy.

Cognex has expanded its range of code reading tools with the introduction of 1DMax, which it describes as a totally new 1D code reading algorithm, capable of providing an accurate read of virtually every type of code, regardless of the size, quality, printing method, or surface.

“Fast, reliable reading of codes is a high priority for manufacturers,” says Carl Gerst, business unit manager for industrial ID at Cognex. “If a barcode reader doesn’t have the right technology to keep up with the variety of different codes found in real-world scenarios—everything from uneven lighting, poor print quality, noisy backgrounds, to scratched codes—it can mean time, cost, and frustration for any manufacturer. That is why higher technology image-based readers are rapidly replacing laser-based readers in a wide range of manufacturing and logistics applications.”

Cognex says that the system’s abilities are based on a critical combination of hardware and software. For 1D barcodes, 1DMax is optimized for omnidirectional reading and can handle extreme variations in code quality at high read rates. For 2D codes, Cognex suggests its 2DMax technology for its ability to handle hard-to-read direct part marking and high-speed printed applications.

Cognex image-based readers also feature Ethernet communications, autofocus capabilities, multiple code reading in a single image, image archiving, and more.
