ODVA announces new editions of CIP network specifications and testing of EtherNet/IP products

ODVA announced that it has published new editions of the specifications for the family of CIP Networks, enhancing the EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, CompoNet, ControlNet and CIP Safety technologies, as well as offering Ethernet/IP product testing.

Nuremberg, Germany – At the SPS/IPC/Drives show, November 25-27, 2008, ODVA announced that it has published new editions of the specifications for the family of CIP Networks, enhancing the EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, CompoNet, ControlNet and CIP Safety technologies. The organization also announced that it will offer testing services for measuring performance attributes of EtherNet/IP products.
The new editions to the specifications represent the second publication update of these specifications in 2008, and contain new information for users seeking to deploy open networks in manufacturing automation. In total, the new editions include 20 enhancements to the specifications. Among these enhancements are:

  • The requirements to support CIP Safety are now defined for products implementing the SERCOS III protocol, integrating SERCOS III devices into the CIP Safety media-independent architecture. The enhancements are applicable to devices that reside directly on a SERCOS network and modular SERCOS devices that contain safety modules.

  • A new optional capability for a device level ring (DLR) is now included for products implementing EtherNet/IP. This capability is said to enable fast recovery of EtherNet/IP networks and will tolerate faults in network infrastructure and network interfaces on end-devices. It supports low switch-over times of 10 milliseconds or less, extensible to large-scale networks of 10,000 devices or more.

  • Quality of service mechanisms in IEEE 802.1D/Q, along with differentiated services, as defined in the TCP/IP suite, have been added for CIP nodes implementing EtherNet/IP. This functionality is said to be especially important for time-sensitive applications, such as those implementing CIP Sync and CIP Motion, where timely packet delivery is essential for system stability and performance.

  • New options for physical media have been added to the DeviceNet

ODVA says it expects that devices containing new enhancements found in the latest specifications will be available in 2009.
ODVA’s announced addition of testing services for the family of CIP Networks is said to represent the next step in ODVA’s activities to aid industry in the deployment of EtherNet/IP for real-time control applications on networks utilizing standard, unmodified Ethernet and Internet standards.
This service is an outgrowth of ODVA’s activities to promote adoption of EtherNet/IP in the widest possible range of manufacturing applications, including control, safety, synchronization and motion, configuration, diagnostics, information, and asset management. To that end, ODVA has engaged in a collaborative process with EtherNet/IP vendors, users, and IT metrology scientists to identify aspects of network performance that have the most impact on real-time control applications and develop the test methodologies on which the testing service will be based. Among those who participated with ODVA in this process were the National Institute of Standards & Technology, the United States Council for Automotive Research, and EtherNet/IP vendors who participate in ODVA’s EtherNet/IP Workshops and Plugfests.
EtherNet/IP products which have received ODVA declarations of conformity as an EtherNet/IP-compliant product are eligible for the testing service and to have their declaration of conformity augmented to include the performance measurements taken by ODVA. The testing service will be offered at ODVA’s Global Technology and Training Center in Ann Arbor, MI.
