Opto 22, developer and manufacturer of the Opto 22 Snap PAC System family of programmable automation controllers, I/O, and accessories, agreed to sell N-Tron Corp. industrial Ethernet network switches and wireless access points .

The Opto 22 quality assurance team did tests to verify that N-Tron industrial Ethernet switches are among the most reliable networking devices, according to Bob Sheffres, Opto 22 vice president of sales. He said N-Tron products and Opto 22 Ethernet-based controllers and I/O products are well suited for wired or wireless Ethernet-connected automation projects.

"N-Tron industrial networking switches can be an essential part of any wired or wireless application," added Warren Nicholson, N-Tron president and CEO, also noting complementary product lines between the two companies.

N-Tron switches are rugged, durable, and industrially-hardened, encased in coated steel enclosures specially designed to reduce noise, Opto 22 says. The switches boast entended environmental specifications, such as up to -40 to 85 oC operating temperatures, increased shock and vibration resistance, and 2 million hours mean time between failures (MTBF). These features-plus redundant power inputs with voltage ranges as great as 10 V dc to 49 V dc-make these switches well suited for implementation in harsh environments and applications in large manufacturing facilities, power utilities, electrical substations, water treatment plants, and other processing facilities, Opto 22 said.

More than a dozen N-Tron managed and unmanaged switches will be among Opto 22 stock to help connect network segments, process and route IP traffic, and manage multicast EtherNet/IP protocol I/O messages. N-Tron managed switches offer port runking, port mirroring, and IGMP snooping. N-Tron's IGMP snooping implementation provides multicast messaging management by intelligently filtering and forwarding (and thus reducing) network traffic among devices-all automatically, without user configuration. Opto 22 said this feature speeds deployment, eliminates configuration errors, and is particularly useful for Opto 22 intelligent, distributed I/O modules for use with Allen-Bradley (IO4AB) systems from Rockwell Automation.

N-Tron managed switches "provide very high levels of‘leak-proof' throughput... perfect for building network architectures that use the EtherNet/IP protocol" from ODVA, said Bryce Nakatani, quality assurance engineer at Opto 22. Selections will include varying copper and fiber-optic options, including N-Tron 508-series "plug-and-play" switches, which do not require IP address or configuration. Lack of a network address means the switches cannot be hacked, Opto 22 says.

Opto 22 also will offer N-Tron wireless access points for use with Opto 22 Snap PAC Wired+Wireless controllers and I/O . N-Tron model 702-W wireless access point is IEEE 802.11a/b/g compliant with full WPA (TKIP) and WPA2 (802.11i/AES) security features, ideal for use with wired and wireless hardware in industrial communications architectures where it is difficult, impossible, or cost prohibitive to run network cabling, Opto 22 said.

Opto 22 is based in Temecula, CA, and N-Tron in Mobile, AL.
