USA 18th in world; Becoming a 501(c)3

USA NOW RANKED 18th IN THE WORLD - national news reports

Once 1st in education, the USA is now ranked 18th and slipping farther down as students in other countries race past US students.  Something is broken with the system.   You may say “who cares, it is not my problem” and go back to the reality-TV program you are watching.  Or “I pay taxes to have other people take care of this problem for me so I have done my part”.

What an individual can do

The fact is that what we have right now only gets us to 18th place.  Also a fact is that while we are waiting for course corrections to be discovered and applied to the national education system there is an alternative path available to us as automation and control professionals that you can start on before going home from work today.  As it turns out the single biggest factor in how well a kid does in school is an adult taking an interest in how that individual is doing.   Also, the biggest single factor in a kid choosing a career in math, science, or engineering is having a mentor who uses those skills in their work.

Young people choose a career that they are familiar with or have seen before.  Join a mentoring program today and let them see how much fun science, engineering, and math can be.  By investing a couple of hours  a week showing a kid what scientists, engineers, and mathematicians do for a living you are investing in the USA’s future.  You do have to admit, giving up two TV programs a week to save the country isn’t all that much a sacrifice, they are mostly re-runs.   Do your part in helping raise the USA from 18th place, one on one.

Becoming a 501(c)3 by becoming 4-H Technology Club

The First Robotics Competition is a sporting event style engineering contest that is a great deal of fun for both kids and adults, either as participants or as spectators.  While talking to the 38 teams in the pit area, I discovered that many of administrative and organizational problems the teams were having would have been solved for them if the became 4-H Clubs.  The technical problems were not the hard part for the Mentors or Students to deal with.  It was other questions that were holding them back or taking up valuable resources.  Questions like how does the team become a 501(c)3 Educational Organization to accept donations from sponsors who want to take the tax deduction for what they are donating?  Usually, setting up a 501(c)3 costs $500 for the application fee, you have to have a board of directors, and accounting from a CPA are about $500 per year from then on.  Or, the 4-H way,  five youth from two or more families and one adult can form a 4-H Club by filling out a two page 4-H application form.

To become Members, the youth ages 5-19 fill out a four page questionnaire / contact information form, pay $10 per year to belong to 4-H.   The adults over 20 years old, to become Volunteers,  fill out a similar six page form and can join for free.  They are then a 501(c)3 under the 4-H umbrella.  Sponsors are a little more comfortable donating to a registered 501(c)3, some require it.  Donors can take the tax deduction. The club then has a licence to fund-raise and solicit donations.  Another reaource suddenly becomes available, the newly formed 4-H club can tap into the extensive 4-H alumni base.   4-H is a huge organization that has been around since 1902.  Large numbers of people have belonged to it over the years or still belong to it.  These people are spread throughout the country, on every rung of the ladder in both large and small companies, in the halls of government.  All it takes to get their help is to show the 4-H clover and ask them for their help.  Or for Batman fans, it is sort of like a four leaf clover version of the bat signal  shined into the sky.

The TC Tinkers 4-H Robot Club is a 501(c)3 Educational Organization, yours can be too simply by filling out the form.
