When you've got a problem—or a project—and you need a specific resource to help you tackle it, who do you call? Thousands of manufacturing professionals dial the number of an automation system integrator. To help you find exactly the right one, Control Engineering created the Automation Integrator Guide in 1993. Control Engineering 's consulting editor Vance VanDoren manages the program.

This 24/7 searchable online database (available at www.controleng.com/integrators ) currently includes nearly 1,800 companies offering design and implementation services specifically for industrial automation and control projects. A eight-way multi-parameter search can sort the list by geographic region served, product experience, industries served, engineering specialization, vendor affiliations and partnerships, annual revenue, professional association, and location. Also search by company name and keyword. This annual print directory provides four additional ways to identify appropriate resources.

Featured listings . Here in print (starting on p. 27), you'll find “featured listings” of 300 of the most active integrators. Listings contain the same data available in the online search, which can help you decide if a particular system integration company is right for you.

Vendor logos . Major automation vendors also may have formal system integrator programs in which they train, support, and sometimes certify specific companies. That extra level of technical partnership provides another method for choosing among integrators. The featured listings include the logos of such vendors. The cross references section (starting on p. 60) provides further print searchability.

Application articles . The application and technology articles in this supplement describe real-world examples of automation integrators at work . Use them to identify integrators with specific expertise, or to get ideas for specific solutions.

System Integrator of the Year Awards . Another way to select an integrator is by recommendation. The fourth annual System Integrator of the Year competition asked a panel of judges to evaluate entries, just as you might evaluate proposals. Judges pore through customer testimonials, application notes, business process descriptions, and other materials to see who might be worthy of such a distinction. This year's panel has again named three winners, who join some distinguished companies (see box below, and 2010 winner details on p. 4).

If you are a system integrator for automation, controls, or instrumentation, you should be in the Control Engineering Automation Integrator Guide. Add your information online now using the “Apply for a listing” link at www.controleng.com/integrators . You can also call Vance VanDoren at 765-296-7600.

If you're a manufacturer looking for a resource, keep this directory for reference. That new project—or problem—could arrive at any time.
