The term mechatronics has been around since the mid-1960s, but was little used until recently. It has come back into vogue as embedded control systems have insinuated themselves into everything from washing machines to cellphones, to thermostats, and automobiles.Some devices, such as robots and automatically guided vehicles (AUVs), are simply not possible without the automated electromechanical systems that fall under the mechatronics discipline umbrella.At issue is how we prepare engineers for careers in mechatronics.
