Admotec’s split-ring encoder solves space problem

A novel, split-ring magnetic encoder from Admotec Inc. promises simpler installation of the sensing device in applications where the rotating shaft has limited access or is captive.


In this diesel-engine camshaft application, the split-ring magnetic encoder mounts directly on the shaft and runs in hot engine oil.

A novel, split-ring magnetic encoder from Admotec Inc . promises simpler installation of the sensing device in applications where the rotating shaft has limited access or is captive. Available for shaft sizes of 0.5-10 in. (12.5-254 mm), these encoders operate at speeds up to 4,000 rpm and offer up to 4,500 counts/rev resolution in environments with oil, dust, and excessive moisture, says Admotec.

The custom design is based on the company’s standard K and EK Series magnetic encoders. One major diesel-engine manufacturer uses these split-ring encoders to derive feedback data for measuring torsional twist in camshafts to improve cam control and lower pollution levels in the engine exhaust. While initially designed for automotive use, these encoders offer a solution in wider applications having limited shaft access.
