American goods get high marks for quality; beer tops list


Milwaukee, WI —Non-durable goods manufacturing gets high quality marks from Americans, according to the latest ASQ (American Society for Quality) Quarterly Quality Report. Beer topped the ASQ list, as that industry group showed the most improvement among the eight industries examined in the third quarter. Other industries measured were apparel, athletic shoes, beverages and soft drinks, cigarettes, food manufacturing, personal care and cleaning products, and pet foods.

Americans were more satisfied than ever with the quality of beer produced by major brewers Anheuser-Busch, Miller, and Coors, said the report. Although the non-durable goods manufacturing category did not experience a great deal of change this quarter, the segment continues to garner high quality marks from consumers. Non-durables’ quality index score stands at 87.4, compared to the national quality index of 78.5 for all measured industries.

“Overall, the continuing strong showing in consumer non-durables suggests that the market leaders in this sector have a solid understanding that quality, as defined by the customer, is a key ingredient of successful corporate strategy,” said Jack West, ASQ’s Quarterly Quality Report expert.

The report is an independent measure of customers’ perceptions of the quality and reliability of products and services. It is developed from data generated by the American Customer Satisfaction Index, which is produced through a partnership with the Stephen M. Ross Business School at the University of Michigan, ASQ, and CFI group. The index measures more than 200 corporations in 41 industries.
