Comtrol’s programmable serial device server has free software

Comtrol Corp . recently introduced its new DeviceMaster PRO programmable device server. This eight-Port, 10/100 Base-T device server provides bus-independent serial port expansion; a platform for hosting and running application-specific programs; and the ability to remotely monitor and manage serial devices.

Comtrol adds that users who presently own, buy, or upgrade to DeviceMaster device servers can receive Comtrol’s new PortVision serial port management console free of charge.

DeviceMaster PRO reportedly delivers quick and easy peripheral connectivity using an Ethernet LAN. This server supports RS-232/422/485 software-selectable interfaces on eight DB9 or RJ45 ports. A 16-port RJ45 model is planned for release in June 2004. The company adds that Device-Master PRO is ideally suited for applications where multiple interface formats are required to connect peripherals located long distances from the server, and when programmability and enhanced surge protection of 25 KV per port is desired.

In addition, DeviceMaster PRO allows serial ports to reside outside the server anywhere on the LAN. This means the server can be kept in a secure location, while ports conveniently reside anywhere they are needed.

Also, PortVision software, bundled with DeviceMaster PRO, helps efficiently locate, remotely configure, and manage device servers over a network from one, centralized personal computer. The software detects and graphically displays every DeviceMaster server on a network. This means that network administrators can see real-time operating conditions for each device server at a glance.
