Federal-Mogul, Siemens VDO developing glow plug with combustion sensor

Southfield, MI—Two automotive suppliers, Federal-Mogul and Siemens VDO, are jointly developing a Piezo-based combustion sensor that is integrated into the glow plug in diesel engine applications.


Southfield, MI— Two automotive suppliers, Federal-Mogul and Siemens VDO , are jointly developing a Piezo-based combustion sensor that is integrated into the glow plug in diesel engine applications. They report that their innovative sensor will, for the first time, enable combustion to be monitored directly in the cylinder. This agreement covers manufacturing and marketing the new technology. Volume production is scheduled to begin in 2006.

The partners add that injection system and resulting engine management play a vital role in reducing vibration, noise, pollutant emissions and fuel consumption in modern diesel engines. Piezo Common Rail injection, introduced by Siemens VDO, supports these goals by enabling multiple injections. To precisely control the combustion process in diesel engines with multiple injections, Federal-Mogul and Siemens are seeking to monitors the pressure curve directly in the cylinder with their new sensor located in the glow plug, which facilitates cold starting of diesel engines.
