Galil Motion Control: 4-axis amplifier connects directly to controllers

Four-axis AMP-19540 amplifier connects easily to various Galil motion controllers (DMC-18xx PCI bus, DMC-21x0, or Optima line) that use a 100-pin SCSI connector and cable.

Adding to Galil Motion Control Inc .’s amplifier product lineup is AMP-19540, a four-axis unit intended to drive either brush or brushless motors rated up to 500 W on each axis. Designed to reside outside the PC, the compact amplifier measures 6.8 x 8.75 x 1 in., and interfaces to several Galil motion controllers via one standard SCSI connection. D-type connectors provide output signal access for each motion axis.

AMP-19540 extends what Galil calls its "controller-and-drive sandwich combination concept" to include controllers with 100-pin SCSI connectors. "This amplifier and controller combination provides OEMs with a cost-effective solution that saves wiring," says Lisa Wade, VP of marketing and sales. "The cost and hassle of complex wiring and interconnect hardware is eliminated."

New AMP-19540 features four transconductance PWM (pulse-width modulated) amplifiers—one for each motor axis—operating at 18-80 V dc, up to 7 Amp continuous (10 A peak). PWM-switching frequency is 60 kHz and gain settings are easily configured with jumpers, according to Galil. Also available is a shunt regulator option and a two-axis version of the amplifier.

Pricing of AMP-19540 is set at $795 in single quantity or $495 in 100 quantities, for immediate delivery from stock. Galil points out that when combined with a DMC-1842 four-axis controller (which sells for $795 in 100 quantity), total amplifier and controller cost comes to less than $325 per axis.
