Global Display Solutions, schools, partner to foster electronics careers

Romanian youth receive electronics training and a chance for work-study experience in nearby manufacturing plants thanks to a partnership between Global Display Solutions (GDS) and community schools.

A partnership between Global Display Solutions (GDS) and several Italian and Romanian schools is helping exchange ideas and provide students with information about careers in electronics. The relationship will also make the Romanian schools eligible to receive European Union funding, a vital benefit because the Romanian government does not financially support its schools.

Schools involved in the partnering effort are those located close to GDS manufacturing sites. The programs are intended to support the Romanian community following the recent opening of a GDS manufacturing facility in Arad and Italian schools in Trissino and Motta Di Livenzo, which are located near GDS’s Italian operations. To date, GDS has provided the Romanian schools with a variety of equipment to enable students to learn, first hand, such industry skills as soldering. Students will also have the chance to work in GDS’s Arad facility and be trained in assembly, test, repair, and PCB insertion. Eight students are presently participating in the work-study opportunity.

GDS has been conducting similar programs in Italy for many years. When the company opened its sites in Italy, it invested time and money in nearby schools, training students in monitor electronics. Many senior managers now at GDS in Italy came to the company through this initiative. GDS hopes the Romanian effort will yield similar results.

The Arad facility opened in September 2004. GDS has invested more than EUR 1 million in the site. By the end of 2005, the operation expects to employ 60 people. The expansion will be facilitated by the new investment and provide locals with employment prospects. GDS manufactures industrial display solutions worldwide for a variety of applications, including process, transport, kiosk, entertainment, and banking.
