Sensor targets pulp, paper industries


On-line measurement of paper formation based on image analysis technology is now available from Honeywell . Precision FotoForm Formation sensor gives paper manufacturers a new way to analyze paper formation, speed up quality control, and reduce paper process troubleshooting time.

The device provides a wide range of information on a number of features that influence paper formation, including variability, light and dark spots, and floc size and shape.
Paper formation is a key quality parameter for most paper grades. Fiber mixture, refining degree, water removal, and pressing process are among the factors that contribute to formation. Most single point and scanning on-line measurement solutions provide only a single index to describe formation.

FotoForm formation sensor is based on advanced illumination and image capture technology that allows simultaneous measurement of multiple formation characters. The characters are independent of each other and form the basis for an accurate and adaptable formation analysis by the sensor. The sensor also reportedly adjusts automatically to a wide range of speeds and basis weights, ensuring reliable measurement results.

The sensor is designed for on-line use in a hostile paper machine environment. Fast image capture allows machine speeds up to 2,200 m/min with no reduction in analysis accuracy. It automatically adjusts illumination for varying basis weights, providing reliable operation to 600 gsm (grams per square meter) sheet weights. An intelligent algorithm removes the effect of uneven illumination, ambient light, and dirt and dust build-up.

Sensor can be linked to Honeywell’s DaVinci system for operator inspection.
