Numerous innovations highlighted Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) 2004 on Sept. 13-16. Some of the most significant included:

  • VMIVME-7807, from GE Fanuc Embedded Systems Inc. , provides high performance and I/O flexibility. VMIVME-7807 is a 6U, single-slot VME single-board computer (SBC) that integrates the Intel’s Pentium M processor with up to 1.5-Gigabyte DDR SDRAM, one PCI-X, 66 MHz PMC expansion slot, dual Gigabit Ethernet, and up to 1 Gigabyte of CompactFlash memory. Operating at up to 1.8 GHz, this new SBC provides high bandwidth and processing power, and is reportedly ideal for I/O intensive applications. VMIVME-7807 will be available in late November 2004.

  • VersaLogic Corp. exhibited ActivMedia Robotics ‘ PatrolBot, which they report is the first fully autonomous robotic surveillance and monitoring system available off-the-shelf. PatrolBot’s intelligence resides inside its embedded PC from VersaLogic. PatrolBots can carry sensors that aren’t practical for permanent installations, as well as new monitoring equipment needed on short notice. PatrolBot can travel to destinations in a “known” building, circumventing obstacles in its path. Security personnel, watching and listening from a control room, can intercede to manually drive the robot and camera, or PatrolBot can be integrated to respond automatically to existing alarms. Security systems feed their commands to PatrolBot’s embedded computer, which also handles processing for cameras, sound, and networking via wireless Ethernet.
