Users of linear displacement sensors are thinking of diagnostics


While most users of linear displacement sensors don’t use diagnostics for the sensors, more are thinking of doing so, according to recent research from Venture Development Corp. (VDC) . Seventh edition of VDC’s “North American Markets for Linear Displacement Sensors” says 74% of users surveyed cited no current requirements for sensor diagnostics; 10% require self-testing; 6%, calibration checking; 4%, accuracy checking; and 4%, signal-strength indication. Other requirements (under 3% each) are reference point checking, position display, and fault annunciation.

“Although users’ current requirements for diagnostic features on linear displacement sensors are relatively low,” says VDC analyst Jake Millette, “a growing number expect such requirements in the near-to-medium term. It is vital for vendors to continue to investigate and expand on the offering of these options.”

Millette says general interest level in diagnostics and other features was high among users; lack of information on the cost and benefits has likely limited proliferation of these features to date.
