EC: MGate 5105-MB-EIP

Network Integration — Network Hardware: The MGate 5105-MB-EIP is a compact DIN-rail mount Industrial Ethernet Gateway that provides bi-directional data exchange between EtherNet/IP and Modbus (TCP and ASCII/RTU) devices and equipment. This is a Control Engineering 2015 Engineers’ Choice award winner.

The MGate 5105-MB-EIP allows interconnection of EtherNet/IP devices and equipment with Modbus TCP and ASCII/RTU. Its flexible design allows for multiple configurations, supporting scanner and adapter modes for EtherNet/IP, as well as master/slave or client/server for Modbus.

Equipped with an embedded Ethernet switch, there is significant panel space savings, since there’s no need for an Ethernet switch when cascading other Ethernet devices. For less demanding applications, the extra port is handy for connecting a laptop.

When it comes to configuration and setup, all that is needed is a computer equipped with Ethernet and a web browser. No additional software is required, but a Windows-based utility is included at no additional charge for those who prefer it for offline configuration. Additionally, the gateway features a microSD card slot for configuration backup and recovery. When a microSD card is installed at power-up, the configuration is copied to the gateway, and it is ready for operation.

Designed for demanding environments, this gateway features redundant 12 to 48 Vdc power inputs, and a fault relay for integration with local controls. To protect against external transients when Modbus ASCII/RTU devices are connected, the unit features a 2 KV optically isolated serial (RS-232/422/485) port. Standard certifications include UL508 for industrial control panels and Class 1 Division 2, ATEX and IEC Ex approval for use in potentially hazardous environments, such as those found in oil and gas, mining, and petrochemical applications. A wide-temperature model is available where -40 to 75 C operating temperatures are required.
