August 28, 2008 The ISA88 Part 1 update group met at the ISA headquarters in Raleigh, NC, August 18-21, and a lot was accomplished! The group resolved all outstanding comments except for one and the chairman/editor Paul Nowicki has created Draft 9 that is ready for the next round of comments. (Need help in providing standards input? See “Standards comments: A few tips to help get your point across.”)
As the Part 1 update continues to be refined the Part 1 committee is feeling confident it can be ready for the whole ISA88 committee before the year is out. The latest face2face had some of the original framers of the approved ISA88.00.01 standard present and the group worked well together in clarification of several contentious parts of the standard, creating what all felt was a greatly improved document that is easier to understand.
While there are some in the community who claim the update work is diluting the batch standard to address other industries, I would challenge them to take a good look at the work and identify through constructive comments exactly how this is occurring. As I view the state of the work I only see a stronger “BATCH” standard that is now even more capable of being leveraged in other industries.
As this work finishes up it is indeed setting a framework for the Part 5 standard to follow and continue the great ISA88 tradition of providing something that is incredibly useful to the industry. With the ISA88 Technical Reports finished and as Part 1 approaches completion I really feel the way is being cleared for Part 5 to swiftly move forward!
Come and join us at the next Part 5 Face2Face, Sept. 09-11 2008 in Dayton, Ohio, and become part of the effort in providing tools to greatly improve the automation of manufacturing industries! Tomorrow, I’ll share what we hope to cover then.
If you’ve recently joined us on this blog, here’s the currently available set of standards available related to ISA88. Part 1 is being updated, we're drafting a new section, ISA88 Part 5, and some topics have been set aside for a possible Part 6. Related issues continue to be discussed in this Standard profits: Make2Pack and ISA88 blog.

ISA88 Part 1 meeting update: A stronger “Batch” standard, good for other industries, too
