Motion control: Company achieves SBTi validation for its climate targets, supporting measurable emission reductions across operations and supply chains.

WEG, a manufacturer of industrial solutions, has had its climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi provides guidance for science-based climate action and this validation recognizes WEG’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact.
Among WEG motors and motion control products important to automation and mechatronics are:
- WEG electric motors including low-voltage IEC motors, three-phase motors, single-phase motors, low-voltage NEMA motors, IEC hazardous area motors, motors for use in flameproof applications, special application motors, marine motors, mining motors, IEEE 841-compliant motors, brake motors, WIMES-compliant motors, water-cooled motors, modular motors, special motors AKH, EC motors, K2F flat motor, medium/high voltage induction motors, squirrel cage induction motors, wound rotor induction motor, synchronous motors, S Line motors, SM40 line motors, EM line motors, W80 AXgen motors, gearboxes and geared motors.
- Generation, transmission and distribution products
- Drives (variable frequency drives, VSDs, variable frequency drives, VFDs, inverters), WEG motion drives
- Industrial controls and automation
- Safety, industrial sensors and power supplies
- Electric panel devices
- Electric mobility Infrastructure
- Battery energy storage

SBTi is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative provides guidance on developing science-based targets, reviews companies’ targets and helps organizations implement measures to address climate change.
Guided by international standards, WEG launched the WEG Carbon Neutral Program in 2022 to track and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Under the program, WEG aims to cut operational emissions by 52 percent by 2030from a 2021 baseline and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
The SBTi validation confirms WEG’s short-term climate targets, covering direct operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2) and value chain emissions (Scope 3), which are evaluated as an economic intensity target in relative to financial performance. This approach provides a framework to track and report environmental performance, aligning its practices with recognized standards for accountability in the industrial sector.
“The approval of the emission reduction targets by the SBTi is a decisive step in WEG’s climate journey, reinforcing our commitment to building a sustainable future,” said Daniel Godinho, director of sustainability and institutional relations at WEG. “Aligning our goals with international technical criteria demonstrates transparency and credibility with stakeholders.”
To meet these climate targets, WEG has established governance measures in line with international guidelines, including the Paris Agreement and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of the countries where it operates. The company uses methodologies such as the Marginal Cost Abatement Curve (MACC) and Return on Investment (ROI) to prioritize emission reduction projects, focusing on energy efficiency, operational efficiency, renewable energy and electric mobility.
With operations in more than 120 countries, WEG’s validated climate targets confirm its ongoing efforts in sustainability responsible operations. The approval reflects the company’s commitment to transparency, accountability and measurable impact. WEG’s initiatives support the energy transition through practical solutions and operational improvements.
