In these times of extending the life of older assets and doing more with less, Simatic PCS 7/Open OS HMI from Siemens Industry is said to enable process plant managers to extend the life of their current distributed control system (DCS) while upgrading to the functions of a modern human machine interface (HMI).

Siemens says it has validated this approach over the past five years on other open operating system migration products. Using open OS provides a framework that allows plants to customize data, faceplates, and symbols while retaining existing controllers, intellectual property, and field wiring. The system includes database automation to simplify configuration for use with non-Siemens controllers by providing an interface to define HMI relevant data in the controller or PLC.

Additionally, the system provides standard PCS 7 runtime strategies for alarm detection, display and response, graphics navigation, and data synchronization. As a result, the company says the costs and engineering work needed to implement alarm handling and graphics navigation strategies are eliminated. www.sea.siemens.com
