2013 Mobility, Ethernet and Wireless Study
2013 Mobility, Ethernet, and Wireless Study
This study was conducted in October 2013 to better understand more about integration, use, and spending for mobility, Ethernet, and wireless technologies and how they help users of automation, controls, and instrumentation to be more productive.
The results of the Control Engineering 2013 Mobility, Ethernet, and Wireless Study are being released into three reports, one for each topic. Once all three reports have been released, the full report will also be available to view and download.
Wireless results
More than half of respondents reported that wireless is either somewhat or highly integrated within their controls, automation, and instrumentation at their locations. Only 23% felt wireless integration was easy; more than one-third called it difficult or worse.

Mobility results
Current company use of mobility devices is growing—companies where more than half of respondents are using mobility devices is expected to grow from 37% to 53% in the next three years. Mobility is primarily used for checking work email, accessing company systems, Internet browsing, and monitoring automation, controls, or instrumentation.

Ethernet results
Ethernet technologies are key components in plant to enterprise integration, industrial Internet, Internet of things (IOT), and big data analytics and optimization. Forty percent of respondents expect to spend more on Ethernet and increase productivity and around 60% of what is spent on Ethernet goes to products.
