Wickliffe, OH— ABB reports it has sold more than 300 of its IndustrialITSystem 800xA worldwide since introducing it in January, and is planning to add new system functionality next year. Scheduled to debut in the first quarter of 2005, these new functions will include integrated: safety, manufacturing management, production intelligence, scalable device management, and asset optimization.
Bob Hausler, ABB’s system marketing VP, says these manufacturing management and production intelligence capabilities are modeled on ISA S95. “This functionality is becoming increasingly important because there is a renewed interest in top to bottom integration with ERP systems,” he says.
Designed to extend the scope of traditional control system to include all automation functions in one operations and engineering environment, enabling plants to achieve substantial costs savings, IndustrialITSystem 800xA encompasses functionality beyond the essential process control offered by ABB’s 800 line of control systems, reaching into production management, smart instrumentation, smart drives and motor control, robotics, information management, and documentation. For more details on this system, see the news section in the February 2004 issue of Control Engineering or click here .
In addition, this new release of 800xA is backwards compatible with ABB’s installed systems base, such as Advant, MOD, Master, Harmony, and Melody.
Some of the 300 companies and institutions that have installed the system so far include Schering Plough Corp., Molson Inc., Bechtel National Inc., Asia Pulp and Paper Co., and Southern Illinois University.
