CANopen connects with Ethernet protocol

Erlangen, Germany —To help CANopen industrial network users more easily connect to Ethernet, CAN in Automation (CiA) recently released the CiA 309 series of gateway specifications. In related news, upcoming seminars include CANopen applications and markets in Las Vegas, NV, Jan. 26, and in Palm Springs, CA, Jan. 30.

The first part of CiA 309 specifies the communication services of the TCP/IP side of the CANopen-TCP/IP gateway. The second part has been jointly developed with the ModbusTCP organization; it specifies the ModbusTCP protocols to access the devices in the CANopen network. The generic ASCII protocols are specified in the third part. All parts may be downloaded free from CiA’s Website.

“The increasing need to link CANopen to TCP/IP-based backbone networks requires standardized access to CANopen devices via a gateway,” says Holger Zeltwanger, CiA managing director. Using those gateways, backbone-networked devices may control or configure or diagnose CANopen devices, Zeltwanger says.

CiA adds that ASCII protocols are used already in, for example, package handling systems, greenhouses, and wind power systems; a French company has implemented the ModbusTCP protocols in several control units and its modular I/O devices.
