Change pitch in rolling-ring linear drive

By Control Engineering Staff October 1, 2001

Aston, Pa. – RS ‘rolling ring’ linear drive now offers five pitch settings for improved linear motion system flexibility. Standard RS linear drives have a fixed pitch setting of 0.5 times the shaft diameter, which is now extended to 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 X shaft diameter, as well. Inserting a set of poly-based pitch wedges (between the rolling ring bearings within the drive nut) easily changes factory-set pitch and is said to cost under $60. No other parts are required. RS linear drive develops speeds up to 5 ft/sec over distances up to 16 ft. Thrust capability is 500 lb (max.). Depending on type of control, repeatability is within
