Compressor Controls Corp. (CCC, Des Moines, Ia.) announced June 15 that it recently commissioned an integrated turbomachinery control system for a reportedly unprecedented parallel, power recovery train (PRT) installation for Reliance Petroleum Ltd. (RPL). CCC’s duplex, fault-tolerant Series 4 system controls the RPT turbomachinery of the fluid catalytic cracking unit at the Jamnagar refinery, which is reported to be the largest grassroots refinery in India. Each PRT consists of an axial air blower, steam turbine, motor/generator, and an expander, which are all connected to the same shaft. The machinery train recovers energy from the process by running hot, pressurized gas through the expander. Series 4 provides control during all operational modes, including start up, shut down, single and parallel operation, and on and off the utility grid. Advanced feedforward control algorithms ensure that negative control-loop interaction is minimized, and provides high-speed adaptation to sudden mode switches caused by any component trip or loss of connection to the utility bus.
