Downers Grove, IL— Contemporary Controls recently extended its family of CAN products with a PC card adapter that adds a physical layer option for CANopen networks. ICPCM-CO enables OEMs to instantly connect all CAN networks to a notebook computer.

‘An external power supply is normally needed for this application, but the ICPCM-CO has a dc-to-dc converter that eliminates this requirement. This is a great convenience for users,’ says Bennet Levine, Contemporary’s R&D manager.

For real-time capture of high-speed messages, ICPCM-CO possesses a 128-kB onboard CAN buffer for use on high-speed CAN networks, and includes 2 kB of dual-port RAM for high-speed data exchange between the card and an attached PC.

By integrating intelligence into the PC card adapter itself, CAN traffic can be captured in real-time. This is important because Windows programs and operating systems don’t process data in real time. The buffer minimizes the possibility of missing messages.

ICPCM-CO is outfitted with the SJA1000 CAN controller chip, offering the full range of data rates up to 1 Mbps and following CANopen specifications. Additional features include listen-only mode and support for 11-bit and 29-bit identifiers. And with the CANopen physical layer, the CAN signal is optically isolated from the PC.
