Fujitsu Computer Systems says it achieved record-breaking growth in 2003 by increasing its year-on-year number of U.S. portable shipments by 53% from 2002. The company credits its success to growth in the third and fourth quarters of 2003 due to retail strategy and the addition of several notebook computer products. Value-added features such as DVD-RW drives, bigger and brighter displays, dual-bank wireless LANs and competitive pricing made the notebooks popular, the company says. Falling system prices and increasing popularity of wireless technology also contributed to improved sales. Supported by a report from International Data Corp., Fujitsu improved year-on-year growth of U.S. portable shipments by 73% in third-quarter 2003 and 35% in the fourth quarter.
On the new product front, Fujitsu has added a tablet PC to its offerings. Designed for mobile applications, the Stylistic ST5000 features a screen designed for field workers who need a reliable mobile computing solution for inspecting job sites, conducting surveys, or visiting clients. The 10.4-in. indoor/outdoor display is an alternative to the indoor-only 12-in. TFT display. It uses special reflective front-light technology to make text and graphics clearly visible in a variety of light environments. In direct sunlight, the display brightens; in low-light conditions, the front light can be adjusted to enhance viewability. Unit features a high-capacity battery and Wi-Fi capabilities and is powered by an Ultra Low Voltage Intel Pentium M processor operating at 1.0 GHz.
