Hirschmann Automation and Control GmbH , located in Neckartenzlingen, Germany, has extended its product range to include the GigaLion-24TP Gigabit Ethernet workgroup switch. The benefits of this 24-port switch, designed specially for use in control rooms, include networking industrial PCs, servers or controllers, and connecting them to the backbone at a data rate of 1,000 Mbps. GigaLion also supports comprehensive security and management functions as well as a range of configuration and diagnostic processes.

The switch also features 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports for RJ-45 connectors and ports for SFP transceivers. These are designed as combo ports, meaning an RJ-45 port is disabled to operate an SFP transceiver. The devices also support a security mechanism to IEEE 802.1x, primarily providing centralized authentication via servers such as Radius or TACACS+.

In addition, up to 255 VLANs can be configured. The switches also feature Generic VLAN Registration Protocol (GVRP), enabling automatic VLAN registration and dynamic VLAN management. Also, the workgroup switch can be configured and diagnosed either via Web browser, Telnet, or console interface. Finally, two versions of the operating system software can be stored, enabling updates to be performed more easily.
