Iconics wins Microsoft’s Windows World Open award

Transneft, a joint stock Russian oil transport company, recently won the 1998 Windows World Open Award, from Microsoft (Redmond, Wa.), in the Energy/Utilities category. The firm successfully completed one of the world’s largest PC-based supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and dispatch systems using Iconics’ Genesis 32 Enterprise Edition software.

Transneft moves 99.5% of all the oil in Russia, about 300 million tons per year though 30,000 miles of pipe, more than 400 pumping stations, 1,000 holding tanks, and 25 refineries from Siberia to the Baltics. The SCADA and dispatch system uses 300 P200 PCs running Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT. The system includes more than 187,000 digital and analog tags communicating via Microwave, land, and 22 satellite earth stations using standard TCP/IP protocol. The 1,500 operator screens that operate the pipeline have an average response time from any point of 5 to 15 sec.

Transneft officials report that using PCs saved the company between $4 million and $5 million over the cost of installing a traditional Unix or proprietary distributed control system. The system also provides early warning pipeline leak detection capabilities.
