Santa Clara, Calif .—The latest version of Animatics’ SmartMotor SM2315 (controller, amplifier, and encoder built into a size 23 brushless dc motor) uses an ASIC-based microcontroller to perform nearly at the level of previous DSP-based models—yet it lowers the cost to $499, for quantity of one. PID loop, trajectory generator, I/O control, user program execution, and communications are all handled by the microcontroller located atop the motor. SM2315 delivers 30 oz-in. continuous torque and has a top speed of 10,000 rpm. Despite the ultra-compact unit (2.25 in. www.animatics.com .
