Integration: ASBPE award for Control Engineering power monitoring article

Chicago, IL— Control Engineering won a Midwest-South regional award in the 29th Annual Awards competition of the American Society of Business Press Editors (ASBPE) for an article written by Mark T. Hoske in October 2006. The cover story case history, “Power Monitoring Optimizes Energy Use,” is based on extensive interviews with the control systems engineer and others at Merck & Co. Inc. The piece is timely because control engineering technologies—core to power monitoring—help optimize energy management systems, making manufacturing more efficient and competitive.
The Control Engineering October 2006 cover story wins ASBPE recognition for editorial excellence.
The power monitoring article combines extensive and unique user information with how-to detail and comprehensive “what with” information from ABB and other automation vendors, noted Renee Robbins, Control Engineering editorial director. “Case histories remain traditionally difficult to secure in technology intensive industries,” she said, “and Mark contacted and interviewed more than a two-dozen industry sources to find the story and gain approvals,” including technology providers, Merck IT, and electrical engineers.
Merck’s system is helping drive a 25% reduction in energy use by end of 2008, and the article helps readers envision and apply cost-effective reduction strategies at a time when energy use ranks among leading global concerns. Sidebars summarize technology as applied, provide tips from an interview with energy management expert drafting a book on the topic, and describe two additional energy management systems. Among thousands of Control Engineering articles at www.controleng.com , “Power Monitoring” ranked third among 2006 postings as of early January 2007.
The Control Engineering article won gold–level editorial excellence recognition in the case history category for publications with circulation of 80,000 or more. Judging is based on quality of writing, reporting and editing; development of the subject; presentation, and value to readers, says ASBPE. Control Engineering is part of Reed Business Information , whose publications won 17 regional awards among approximately 2,600 total entries. Awards were presented in downtown Chicago July 19, 2007.
Other Control Engineering ASBPE awards include:
50th Anniversary Issue Supplement , a 2004 gold-level editorial excellence award in the special supplement category;
A taxing consideration , 2004 recognition in the signed editorial category; and
Artificial Intelligence… Within , 2003 recognition in the technical article category, among others.
