Foxboro, MA— Invensys/Foxboro ‘s new CFT50 mass flow transmitter is reported to be unique because it continues to operate during two-phase flow. CFT50 features a patented technology to enable uninterrupted operation in batch applications stating with empty flow-tube conditions. CFT50 is designed to control all aspects of the Coriolis meter for precise measurement in traditionally difficult-to-measure applications.

In recognition of its capabilities, ISA, the Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society (Research Triangle Park, NC) announced on Oct.23 that CFT50 won the ‘Best of Show’ title at ISA 2002’s New Products Showcase. CFT50 competed against 15 other products displayed by ISA 2002’s exhibitors.

Traditionally, Coriolis meters could not handle two-phase flows like liquids with entrained gases. Such conditions adversely affect sensor performance in ordinary Coriolis meters by creates erratic vibration of the flow tubes. CFT50 meter minimizes the impact of entrained air by using a dual digital processing system that improves meter control throughout all stages of void fraction operation.

CFT50 offers the best of both worlds; precise and reliable measurement for demanding applications at a low cost of ownership, according to Michael Jost, Invensys’ measurement and instrumentation division vp. ‘Coriolis meters provide direct measurement of mass flow, which is highly desirable in applications requiring precise, accurate measurement, particularly for difficult to meter materials, such as slurries and inhomogeneous fluids. The traditional problem has been the impact of entrained air, which can interrupt measurement for tens of seconds and stall or shutdown the flow tube,’ says Mr. Jost.
