Matrikon, Tai-Ji partner on controller performance

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada— Matrikon Inc. and Tai-Ji Control recently joined to provide a “closed-loop system identification” solution to reduce deployment and maintenance needed by model-predictive control (MPC) applications. The two firms report that maintaining good MPC performance is a continuing challenge for many plants, and that model quality is often a key contributor to performance deterioration. Consequently, a more efficient method of model identification can greatly reduce the time required to update these applications.

“We’re excited to include Tai-Ji’s Identification (ID) engine as a module in our ProcessDoctor control performance improvement product,” says Warren Mitchell, Matrikon’s product manager. “The MPC identification technology in Tai-Ji, nicely complements our ProcessDoctor’s control performance improvement technology. ProcessDoctor was developed to address control issues at all levels in a plant’s control hierarchy, including the MPC layer. In one application, users can identify and diagnose problems at regulatory and MPC levels, as well as automatically step-test their applications. We’re continuing to work hard at building an integrated environment to address control issues.’

Using closed loop system identification technology, Tai-Ji’s ID module automatically tests the MPC controller, and gives users an appropriate model set. The application was designed for generic use with popular MPC application brands. Users have documented up to a 66% reduction in engineering effort by deploying and re-identifying MPC applications using these methods.
