Microsoft releases beta of Visio 2002, plans May ’01 release

Chicago, Ill. -Microsoft (Redmond, Wa.) released the beta version of Visio 2002 on March 6, which is expected to be available in May 2001. This release, the first since Microsoft’s acquisition of Visio in January 2000, streamlined the product line and aligned it more closely with Microsoft products, explained Kevin Lisota at National Manufacturing Week.
New features include ability to publish diagrams as web pages and display nongraphical object properties within a browser, Mr. Lisota told Control Engineering. Personalized menus, smoother image import and manipulation, keyboard shortcuts, and Answer Help Wizard are among features from the forthcoming release of Office XP.
The new product line consists of two, with an add-on, instead of four options: Visio Standard and Visio Professional. Advanced network programming tools of Visio 2000 Enterprise Edition will be available in Microsoft Visio Enterprise Network Tools, an add-on for Visio Professional 2002. A subscription-based web site, Visio Network Center, will offer online access to new Visio solutions and objects. Thirteen languages are supported; an XML file format allows easier import and export of Visio diagram aspects for developers.
