How technologies and human needs influence computer display designs are among topics to be addressed at SID 2004 , a major international display show and conference taking place in Seattle this spring. The issues will be addressed by senior executives from three major display companies who are expected to keynote the event. The symposium, seminar, and exhibition will be held May 23-28 at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center.
Products on display at SID 2004 include LCDs by Italian industrial designer Michele De Lucchi from Global Display Solutions Ltd.
The keynote session will open with Richard F. Rashid, senior vice president, Microsoft Research , looking at how changes in processors, software, storage, graphics and communications will change the way people interact with computers and at how display technology has a critical role to play. Johan van de Ven, CTO, Philips Mobile Display Systems and Communications Businesses , will describe the different human environments that can evolve in the future and how they can impact the ways displays are perceived and used. Dong-Hun Lee, executive vice president, Samsung Electronics AMLCD Div., will explain the $2-billion joint venture between Samsung and Sony for making TFT-LCD panels.
Nearly 500 exhibitors are expected to attend the event. A multi-track program of technical symposium papers, exhibits, applications, tutorial and special events will provide attendees with a variety of options. Technical sessions will include more than 350 papers. The week will also include an all-day business conference devoted to international display business opportunities.
Moving floor display, a shared venture between GDS and Flasma, is incorporated into the floor and takes up no space.
The business conference, slated for Monday, May 24, will feature speakers sharing their experiences and insights in an interactive environment and an evening networking reception exclusively for business conference attendees. Keynoting the business conference is Bruce Berkoff, executive vp, LG.Philips LCD . His talk is titled: “Flat, digital and resolution that will knock your socks off: the future of display.”Among those presenting at the show and conference is Global Display Solutions Ltd ., an industrial monitors manufacturer. Products to be shown include LCDs with touchscreens, a moving floor display, and a 3D display. The moving floor display, the result of a shared venture between GDS and Flasma , is incorporated into the floor and therefore takes up no space. Waterproof and durable, it can be used inside and out. The 3D display, a joint enterprise between GDS and Dynamic Screen Entertainment Ltd., projects images that appear, like holograms, to be suspended in mid-air.
