Line of preloaded rack & pinion drive systems are designed for axis-drive applications requiring high-accuracy positioning. They eliminate backlash by using two pinions—one to drive the axis and one to preload the axis—to preserve accurate axis positioning during the transition between acceleration/steady state and deceleration, where the rack and pinion contact and load reverse direction. Systems come in two types: mechanically preloaded and electrically preloaded systems, where preload is achieved by electrically ”braking” one pinion against the other. These systems require two motors/gearboxes, and a special motor controller to handle the preload.
