Saab Rosemount secures tank gauging contract in Bahamas

Freeport, Bahamas— An oil storage tank terminal owned by Bahamas Oil Refining Co. (BORCO) and Venezuela-based PDVSA has ordered radar-level tank gauging for its 43 storage tanks from Saab Rosemount Tank Control . BORCO is a former refinery turned into a storage terminal. It is the largest tank terminal in the Bahamas.

The $400,000-project includes a Saab Rosemount radar gauging system with multi-spot temperature measurement, as well as network adapted inventory tank gauging software packages. The software calculates all inventory values, such as net standard volumes, makes event re-cording, and alarm management.

Before awarding the contract, BORCO tested two Saab Rosemount radar gauges at the site for more than a year. The test gauges emulated the fieldbus communication of the previously installed mechanical gauges, which made electrical installation easier and less costly. Saab Rosemount reports that it was the first company to introduce radar-level tank gauging in 1972, and that it’s presently the leading tank gauge supplier. The company has been part of Emerson Process Management (Austin, TX) since 2001.

The company adds that its main product is the TankRadar Rex system, a complete tank gauging system for the oil industry. The system includes gauges for all types of storage tanks, as well as HMI software with inventory calculations, integrated temperature, pressure and water bottom measurement. Also, advanced communication features, such as emulation of other vendors’ fieldbuses, OPC compatibility and Internet connection are part of the package.
