Safety: Software helps; SIL 2-certified pressure transmitters; safe wiring modules
A new software partnership between Green Hills and 3S Smart Software targets industrial safety, while the new pressure line from IPS has achieved CEC Dual Seal Transmitter Certification. Additionally, Wago is introducing a modular wiring system, which enhances electrical safety.
Software augments safety: Green Hills Software Inc . has announced a partnership agreement with 3S-Smart Software Solutions, makers of CoDeSys, the IEC 61131-3 programming system for creating controller applications. 3S will integrate CoDeSys SP, the run-time environment for CoDeSys applications, with the Green Hills Platform for Industrial Safety .
Dan Mender, vice president of business development at Green Hills Software, said, “3S is a leader in 61131-3 programming and there is a large installed base of 61131-3 applications in this segment. The addition of CoDeSys enables our industrial controls customers with a seamless way to integrate these applications into Integrity-based systems.”
According to Roland Wagner, marketing manager at 3S-Smart Solutions Software, “The integration of CoDeSys V2.3 with the Platform for Industrial Safety allows the hosting of IEC 61131-3 applications in a safe and secure manner.”
In 2006, Green Hills announced that Integrity achieved certification by TÜV to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3) of the IEC-61508 safety standard. SIL3 is the highest assurance level achievable for an individual software component. The certified Integrity operating system forms the core of the Green Hills Platform for Industrial Safety, a solution composed of tools, operating systems, services, and middleware aimed at reliability-critical industrial control and automation systems.

IPS unveiled instrument safety solutions at ISA Expo last week. Invensys Process Systems (IPS), offers new process safety solutions, including a line of SIL 2-certified pressure transmitters and dual-seal certification required by the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC). The company’s five most popular Foxboro HART version pressure transmitters are now SIL 2-certified by TÜV Rheinland, and all IPS differential, gauge and absolute pressure transmitters meet the new Canada CEC/NEC Dual Seal certification.
Certification is awarded in part on Safe Failure Fraction (SFF) numbers and calculated failure rates. The SFF rating is key to the certification and the new transmitters surpass the 90% rating that TÜV Rheinland commonly requires for qualification for use in safety instrumented systems (SIS) at the SIL 2 level. The “mean time before failure” (MTBF) rating of the transmitters is 200 years. The transmitters are available on remote and closed-coupled sealed standard performance options of the Foxboro HART IAP10 and IAP20 absolute pressure transmitters and on IGP10 and IGP20 gauge transmitters.
IPS announced that its differential, gauge, and absolute pressure transmitters are compliant with 2008 amendments in the CEC to conform with the ANSI/ISA 12.27.01 standard, “Requirements for Process Sealing Between Electrical Systems and Flammable or Combustible Process Fluids.” This requires back-up seals or equivalent protection for pressure transmitters and other devices to safely separate flammable process fluids from process electrical equipment.
IPS is the first leading instrumentation supplier to offer Dual Seal certification on its complete line of differential, gauge and absolute pressure transmitters. Users can achieve CEC Dual Seal safety in flammable process fluid environments without the cost of separate, secondary sealing methods.
“We were able to attain certification so quickly because all of our secondary seals and venting are designed and built into each transmitter,” said Pat Cupo, IPS Pressure Product Line manager. “This facilitates the testing necessary to achieve the certification and can result in savings of up to $400 per transmitter by eliminating the need to purchase third-party seals and vents.”
CEC regulations require all Canadian companies purchasing or installing new pressure transmitters or retrofitting existing devices to install dual-seal-certified protection. I/A Series transmitters from IPS are now the only CEC dual-seal-certified transmitters available off the shelf.
