Thermo pays $4.5 million for Siemens’ personal dosimetry division

Waltham, MA— Thermo Electron Corp. agreed Oct. 2 to buy Siemens U.K. ’s Electronic Personal Dosimetry (EPD) business for approximately $4.5 million in cash. Atlanta-based EPD supplies radiation-monitoring products and systems used mostly in nuclear power plants, the military, and by first responders for safety, security, and civil defense applications. The business will become part of Thermo’s Environmental Instruments division in its Measurement and Control sector.

With projected sales of $10 million for 2003, EPD’s products include electronic dose meters worn by personnel in radiation-sensitive locations, and modular teledosimetry systems that can be integrated to form a complete monitoring network. The division also delivers wireless radiation-monitoring systems. EPD also operates in Poole, Dorset, U.K.

In addition to broadening our portable radiation- monitoring offerings, EPD adds advanced technologies for wireless monitoring and networking applications. Given the heightened concern for security around the world, we expect growing demand for systems that protect people wherever there’s a risk of radioactive contamination,’ says Marijn Dekkers, Thermo Electron’s president and CEO.

Ian Howard, Siemens’ mergers and acquisitions director, adds that, ‘This sale is a logical step for Siemens. Although EPD has won good customer orders and its future prospects are excellent, the personal dosimetry business has not been core to our business strategy for a considerable time.’
