Young adults like using touchscreens, a recent survey by Elo TouchSystems reveals. Nearly 90% of Americans between 18 and 34 said they believe touchscreens will become the standard service-industry medium in the next few years. According to Elo, the opinions of younger Americans often help predict future trends, in this case illustrating how lifestyles are becoming increasingly reliant on touchscreen technologies. Wider use likely will translate into more touchscreen applications for industry, as well.

The survey, conducted by market research firm Penn, Schoen, and Berland, showed a majority of respondents had extremely positive attitudes toward touchscreens and expect to see a substantial increase in their deployment over the next several years. Nine of 10 said touchscreens will be the standard way of performing such tasks as airline check-ins, buying tickets, and checking out of the supermarket.

Among other notable results, the survey showed:

85% feel comfortable using touchscreens in public;

Only 19% said they rarely or never use touchscreens;

96% say touchscreens make their lives easier;

Nine of 10 surveyed say touchscreens save time; and

86% would rather use touchscreens to place orders for fast food than order from a person.
