Below are a series of Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Engineering Leaders Under 40 program on nomination eligibility, required materials, and nomination due date for the 2024 program. If you have a question that was not covered below, contact Amanda Pelliccione at [email protected].

Who can be nominated?

Control Engineering and Plant Engineering’s “Engineering Leaders Under 40” competition is open to AEC professionals from around the world who are 40 years old or younger as of Sept. 1, 2024. Nominees may come from the following fields:

  • Aircraft, aerospace or defense
  • Alternative energy equipment, incl. solar, wind power
  • Automotive or transportation
  • Chemicals
  • Communications systems or equipment
  • Computer systems or peripherals
  • Consulting, business or technical services
  • Consumer electronics or appliances
  • Electrical equipment
  • Engine, turbine, mechanical or electrical power transmission equipment
  • Engineering or system integration services
  • Food, beverage or tobacco
  • Government or military
  • Industrial controls, test or medical equipment
  • Industrial machinery
  • Information, data processing or software services
  • Instrumentation, measurement or control systems or devices
  • Mining, agriculture or construction
  • Petroleum or refining
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Plastics or rubber
  • Primary or fabricated metals
  • Scientific or research services
  • Semiconductors or other electronics components
  • Textiles or apparel
  • Utilities or telecommunications
  • Wood, paper or printing
  • Other manufacturing

Note: Individuals who were previously nominated for Control Engineering and/or Plant Engineering’s previous recognition competitions but not selected are eligible. Individuals previously nominated and who were selected as a “Leader Under 40” are not eligible.

Can I nominate myself?

Yes. If you’re under 40 (IMPORTANT: Nominees must be at least 18 years old and 40 years old or younger as of Sept. 1, 2024.) and believe you qualify, feel free to nominate yourself.

Can I nominate more than one person?

Yes. If you feel there are several individuals who truly deserve consideration, please submit their nominations. There is no limit to the number of submissions you can make, but please note that you’ll need to provide supporting materials for all nominated individuals.

Is there a fee for making a nomination?

No. There is no fee associated with the Engineering Leaders Under 40 recognition program.

How do I know if my nomination went through? Will I receive a confirmation?

Yes. After submitting your nomination (via the online nomination form), you should see a confirmation page (note: you will also receive an email confirmation that confirms we received your nomination). If you have concerns that your nomination did not go through, please e-mail Amanda Pelliccione, [email protected].

Will I be notified if the person I nominate is selected?

Yes. WTWH Media will contact the individuals we select for Engineering Leaders Under 40 recognition, as well as the individual who submitted their nomination.

What are the criteria for selecting an Engineering Leader Under 40 winner and how does the selection process work?

Nominations will be judged by the editors of Control Engineering and Plant Engineering, who will be looking for successful and well-rounded individuals under 40 years old (IMPORTANT: Nominees must be at least 18 years old and 40 years old or younger as of Sept. 1, 2024). Some of the qualities and characteristics the editors will be looking for (in no particular order):

  • Leadership skills
  • Inventiveness
  • Sustained career progress
  • “People” skills
  • Academic training
  • Dedication
  • Personal integrity
  • Technical skills
  • Community outreach/volunteer work

When will the Engineering Leaders Under 40 feature be published?

The Engineering Leaders Under 40 feature is scheduled for publication in Control Engineering September 2024 and Plant Engineering September/October 2024 issues.

When are nominations due?

All nominations are due June 28, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. CT. (Deadline has been extended to July 12, 2024, 5 p.m. CT.) Note: We cannot accept emailed nominations. All nominations must be made using the online nomination form.
